I've received emails from several people
outside of our area asking how they can get involved. There are
basically two ways - find a Lure Coursing club near you and see if they
allow non-sighthounds to run at practices ... or build your own course!
To find a Lure Coursing club near you go to
the American Sighthound
Field Association club listing. To
build your own course you will need the following:
- A large, flat grassy area in which to
run the course. I'd say the minimum would be 2 acres.
That's what we have and we run a pretty decent sized course (for
non-sighthounds). If you are going to be offering runs to
other people - the area MUST be fenced. Lure Coursing
is done off leash - and if a dog isn't interested (and some just
aren't) you don't want a dog taking off on you! It also keeps
other dogs from breaking loose from their owners and charging onto
the course while another dog is running.
- A Lure Coursing machine. You can
purchase one or build your own. Injoy
has the machines as
well as the pulleys
for sale. We get our pulleys from them. They are very
helpful and answered all our questions! Be prepared - a
pre-built machine starts around $400! Then you need the
batteries, pulleys, string ... it gets pricey! If you go the
Build-Your-Own route - here are instructions
on how to do that.
- Once you have the machine you'll need
pulleys (they guide the string around the course), string (certain
types of string work better for lure coursing - here's
why), batteries for the machine, a cart to drag all the
equipment around with (the machine is heavy!), plastic grocery bags
(white for summer and blue for winter) and bits of fur (fake or
real) for those dogs that don't chase the plastic bags.
- Practice, practice, PRACTICE running
the equipment! For some dogs it's easy to run the lure - for others
it takes finesse and good timing. You don't want a super fast
dog to come into a corner with the intention of making a sharp
turn. That's how injuries happen. You have to be able to
read the dog and lead the dog.
- For your dog you are going to want a
quick-release collar.
